The famous view from my apartment. The billboard stands above a Starbucks in a mini-mall (Hollywood, incidentally, has more mini-malls and billboards per capita than any other US municipality). See “Raven papparazzi” below.
The same, from below.
On the billboard across the street.
George and Gracie? Kate and Spencer? Martin and Lewis?
I’m ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille
While I was toweling off after my shower, I could hear ra’ak, ra’ak outside, very near - must have been in the pines. Going on 10:00 a.m. Overcast, moderate temps. Never saw them though. There is no view from the bathroom window to speak of. Do they make rounds? Do they always stop by LaBrea [...]
I heard them before I saw them, as usual when I’m in the apartment. My street is lined with really tall Canary Island pines, popular with LA landscapers from the 1920s on, and I suspect that aside from their favorite billboards, the ravens hang out in the pines too (can’t see them, though).
Over coffee, [...]

Keen photos. Info new to me: “The raven’s ability to fly upside-down and defend itself with both claws and beak is enough to thwart even the fearsome dive-bombing attack of a Peregrine.”
Not so sure: “Ravens are found in almost every biome in North America, Europe, and Asia but tend to avoid large human populations and [...]
Had to go to work very early this morning, and I kept an eye out as I left Hollywood. Somehow I had built up in my mind a picture of ravens busily emptying garbage cans, dumpster diving, and strolling along the deserted streets (Hollywood is not a morning person).
Not a large black bird in [...]
A busy Sunday. On my way to the car early in the morning, ravens low over LaBrea, and maybe a crow policing them, but one turned down Hawthorne, the other landed on a streetlight above me. “Yo!” I said to it once or twice, and it hopped a nervous hop, and flew on to the [...]
Spent a couple hours in GP this afternoon. Ravens all over the place from the get-go. While I was climbing up Mt. Hollywood, they were mobbing a hawk over Captain’s Roost. Once up on the summits, it seemed mostly to be a matter of pairs coming and going, with one seemingly predominating - the ones [...]
Spent a bit of time this morning chasing ravens with my telephoto around LaBrea and Sunset. First from my apartment window, then at much closer range. They moved from one side of the street to the other, and then flew off separately, the second after some delay and interesting vocalizing (more of a coo than [...]
Great raven photos from all kinds of sources at Flickr.
Metadata for the masses:
“What are tags?
You can give your photos a “tag”, which is like a keyword. Tags help you find photos which have something in common. You can assign as many tags as you wish to each photo.”
Returning from the Rivas Canyon hike and almost home, when I looked up from the car window to see two ravens settling on a billboard. One had some stuff in its beak - half a squirrel? grey fabric? hard to say. The other was following. The big LA billboards are pretty huge and have a [...]
